I think a lot of us like bamboo and even though few of us have ever stood in a natural bamboo forest I believe most would take comfort in it. When I stood in the bamboo forests to shoot a series of images leading to this one, I was at times lost but never once did I feel stress. The giant bamboo is beautiful and its lush green tops make a calming soft sound as they sway in the wind. The bamboo is truly beautiful.
The title “Lost in Bamboo” is as much wishful thinking as it is a reflection of the place. I would like to build a home in the middle of this bamboo forest and enjoy my morning coffee staring into it. I have included this image in my series of large pieces because it is only in large format that you can really appreciate its beauty.
This image was created for limited production as a large format 2.1 meter (7 foot) wide art piece but can be produced in smaller custom sizes as well.
Behind the scenes…
I have long wanted to see and photograph mature bamboo. I traveled to an area in Jiangsu Province in China where I expect to find a jungle of bamboo. But what I found was more of a forest with wide spacing and a distinct green bamboo leaf canopy. I had a visual in my mind of what it would look like but this wasn’t it. I couldn’t have been more happy to find the vegetation was completely different from what I thought I would find and this helped me to create an image that I am thrilled with. This image was taken at about 5am before the sun could cut into the forest. The resulting soft light and multiple exposures allows this image to have texture and detail that might otherwise have been lost.
